What cost presses hardest, voter by voter

Every registered voter in the country, colored by which cost of living weighs most on them. At the national view one dot stands for 5,000 voters. Zoom in and the dots refine, down to one for every 200 voters, and the current ratio shows under the map. Click a driver to turn it on or off, hover a dot for the county mix, scroll to zoom and drag to move around.

What you are looking at. Five PharosGraph audiences, sold separately, one per driver. Between them they account for every registered voter in the country. Housing is the main driver for about one voter in four nationally.

How it is built. Main Driver is whichever of the five costs takes the biggest share of each voter's own cost of living. It says which cost dominates for that voter; it does not rank the issue against anything else, and it is not a measure of opinion. Scoring is per voter, and membership comes from the delivered audience files. Zoomed in, each dot sits inside the block group its voters live in. The hover gives the county the dot belongs to, and the counts under the map follow what is on screen, locking to a state when the map opens on one. Alaska and Hawaii are drawn to scale and placed in the southwest of the frame.

Opening on a place. Three ways, and they combine with each other. ?view=oh opens on a state by postal code and locks the counts to it. ?center=41.88,-87.63&z=9 centers on a latitude and longitude at a zoom level, 1 for the whole country up to 20. ?view=40.4,-80.2,41.0,-79.6 fits a bounding box given as south, west, north, east in degrees. Add ?show=housing to open with a single driver on, or ?show=all for the combined universe.
